Mind Body Detox for the New Year

Loosing weight is still the most used New Year’s resolution even though many people make that same resolve year after year. Consider doing a detox diet to clear out the residue of the last year and get cleaner on the inside. I started my 21-day Detox from Dr. Sue Morter on December first, as sort of a holy-days fast. It is working out nicely and I am losing weight in the process. This detox sets the stage and makes room for shifting other habits and behaviors too.

You may wonder, why do a detox? What are the advantages? Here are just seven of many reasons:

  1. Clear the body of excess waste

The biggest thing that detoxing helps with is allowing the body to rid itself of any excess waste it’s been storing. As much as we don’t want to think about what is accumulating in our colon, cleansing the colon is one of the best things we can do for self-care. A backed-up colon can cause toxins to be reintroduced into the body, rather than exiting as it should. Most detox programs are designed to release the build-up of unprocessed food, helping not only the colon; but liver, kidneys, skin, and hair.

  1. Lose weight

You will shed the excess water your body holds onto because it is dehydrated. Most people do not drink enough water but while on a detox you drink water to move the waste through the system and to help avoid headaches.  It offers you a healthier way to look at eating to establish long-term habits. As your body cleanses you rid yourself of unhealthy habits. It also stops the cravings that keep us eating when we are not hungry.

  1. Strengthen the immune system

When you detox your body, you free your organs to function the way they should. This gives your immune system a boost since you’ll be able to absorb nutrients better, including Vitamin C. Many detox programs also focus on light exercises which help to circulate lymph fluid through the body and helps it to drain, strengthening your immune system in the process. It will also help reduce allergies or at least help you determine what food might be having a reaction to.

  1. Boosts your energy

Many detox program followers report feeling more energetic. By cutting out the sugar, caffeine, trans fat, saturated fat, and replacing them with fresh fruits and vegetables, you’ll be getting a natural energy boost, one that comes without a resultant crash. Again, it’s vital to stay well hydrated while on any detox program, and that can also be a source of increased energy if you typically don’t get enough water throughout the day. You can use your newfound energy to exercise more and be more active overall.

  1. Clearer thinking

A good detox program also addresses your consciousness during the cleanse. The use of meditation is often recommended to get back in touch with your body during this time of purging and cleansing of toxins. Those who detox often say that they lose that sense of fogginess, and think more clearly during a detox than when not on it. It makes sense, since many of the sugar-filled and fat-filled foods that surround us cause us to feel lethargic. Not feeling comfortable in our bodies contributes to being unconscious in our lives.

  1. Lighter feeling

One of the reported benefits of detoxing is a feeling of being lighter. There are several reasons why this would be the case, especially if you’ll be doing a colon cleanse as part of the program. When you stop eating foods that weigh you down, and replace them with fresh organic fruits and vegetables, the bloating one often feels is removed. You will not feel like over eating since fruits and vegetables have a larger fiber content.

  1. Anti-aging

The constant barrage of toxins that the body deals with is one major factor to the aging process. By reducing the amount of free radical damage done to the body, you see long-term longevity benefit. When you finish your detox program, it’s so much easier not to go right back to the lifestyle that was causing the toxicity in the first place. Sticking to an improved diet and getting daily activity are great ways to make sure that you feel as good as possible each day of your life.

What I am finding as I detox:

I am losing weight. I have noticed that I can pass by temptations to eat foods that are not recommended. I do not have the obsession with food that was running my life. I buy my veggies for the next few days and don’t have to think about food again. Not eating heavy foods has given me more energy, and having more energy has allowed me to step up my exercise. I am feeling like I could make eating clean my new way of life!

Bottom-line, when you complete a detox, you will feel good, and when you feel good, good things happen! Detoxing is often used to jump start weight loss or to start a new health plan, but really there’s no better reason than just to feel better. When you set the stage for well-being in your body and mind, you are going to improve all areas of your life. You can look forward to better relationships, better productivity at work, feeling lighter and happier, thus giving you a new zest for life that will propel you into the new year ahead.
